How Mr Mushroom Lets Shoppers Build Their Own Snack Packs on Shopify With PushBundle
目录

A shopper lands on Mr Mushroom and sees about a dozen snack options. Buying one bag means committing to one flavor, while a fixed variety pack means accepting the flavors the merchant chose.

Neither option gives the shopper full control.

Mr Mushroom solves that problem with a multi-product mix and match setup. Shoppers can build their own 4-pack or 6-pack by selecting snack products themselves, while PushBundle controls how many items must be selected before the bundle can be added to the cart.

This case study looks at how the Mr Mushroom setup works, why it uses a multi-product mix and match bundle, how the 5% and 8% pack discounts work, and what merchants with a similar flavor-heavy catalog can take from it.

TL;DR

  • Mr Mushroom uses a multi-product mix and match bundle to let shoppers build their own 4-pack or 6-pack from separate snack products.

  • The 4-pack offers 5% off, while the 6-pack offers 8% off.

  • A progress bar shows shoppers how many products they have selected, and Add to Cart stays inactive until they complete the required pack size.

  • Once completed, the selected products are added to the cart as one bundle product, so shoppers cannot remove an individual component from the cart to bypass the bundle rules.

  • Customers can add more than one completed bundle to the cart, including another copy of the same bundle or a different flavor combination.

  • Shopify's free Bundles app does not support mix-and-match bundles, so this type of setup requires a third-party bundle app or a custom Shopify Plus implementation.

Meet Mr Mushroom: Vacuum-Fried Snacks in About a Dozen Flavors

Mr Mushroom sells vacuum-fried vegetable and mushroom snacks alongside freeze-dried fruit.

Its bundle selection includes products such as original, sea salt, spicy, and wasabi shiitake mushroom snacks, along with snap pea, okra, broccoli, cucumber, mixed mushroom, apple, strawberry, and peach. The Build Your Own 4 Pack page currently exposes roughly a dozen eligible snack products.

Its vacuum-fried snacks use a low-temperature process below 185°F. The brand also states a shelf life of 12 to 18 months for its process. These are claims made by Mr Mushroom, not by PushBundle.

The most important detail for this case study is how those flavors exist in Shopify.

They are separate products.

That means the customer is not simply choosing four variants of one base product. They are choosing across different products in the catalog. That difference determines which type of bundle the store needs.

Two Problems a Multi-Flavor Snack Store Runs Into

Selling many flavors sounds simple until you want shoppers to build their own assortment. Then two questions appear quickly: how will customers choose the products, and what will encourage them to choose a larger pack?

Problem 1: Shopify's Bundles App Does Not Support Letting Customers Pick Their Own Flavors

Shopify describes three main bundle types: fixed, multipack, and mix-and-match.

A fixed bundle contains products chosen in advance. A multipack contains multiple units of the same product. A mix-and-match bundle lets the shopper compose the bundle from interchangeable products and associated variants.

Shopify's free Bundles app supports fixed bundles and multipacks. It does not support mix-and-match bundles. Shopify recommends using a compatible third-party bundle app for mix-and-match setups, while Shopify Plus merchants can also create a custom solution with the Bundles APIs.

That distinction matters for Mr Mushroom.

A fixed pack could contain four predetermined flavors, but the merchant would be making the choices. Mr Mushroom wants shoppers to pick the flavors themselves.

The number of possible packs also grows surprisingly fast.

For a merchant with 12 available flavors, the possible combinations look like this:

Pack size

Distinct flavors only

Same flavor can repeat

4 bags

495

1,365

6 bags

924

12,376

These numbers are mathematical examples for a 12-flavor catalog. They are not a statement about Mr Mushroom's specific repeat-selection rules.

Even without repeats, manually creating 495 different 4-packs would make little sense. A mix-and-match setup lets the merchant define the available products and selection rules once while customers create the combination they actually want.

This is one of the limitations of Shopify's native bundles once the customer, rather than the merchant, needs to decide which products go inside the pack.

Problem 2: A Bigger Pack Needs Its Reward Built Into the Pack

The second problem is a pricing decision rather than a Shopify limitation.

If a shopper is being asked to move from buying one snack to building four or six, there should be a clear reason to complete the larger pack.

Mr Mushroom handles that with two discount levels.

The 4-pack is configured with a 5% discount. The 6-pack increases the discount to 8%.

Using the $6.49 single-bag price associated with the bundle setup, the pricing works like this:

Option

Price before bundle discount

Bundle price

Price per bag

Saving

1 bag

$6.49

$6.49

$6.49

None

4-pack at 5% off

$25.96

$24.66

About $6.17

$1.30

6-pack at 8% off

$38.94

$35.82

$5.97

$3.12

The calculations are based on the configured bundle percentages and the single-bag price used for this setup. Store prices can change over time.

Moving from the discounted 4-pack to the discounted 6-pack adds $11.16 for two more bags. That works out to $5.58 for each additional bag, which is about 14% below the $6.49 single-bag price.

That creates a simple discount ladder. The shopper gets more choice by building a pack, and the larger pack receives the stronger percentage discount.

How PushBundle Set Up Mr Mushroom's Build Your Own Packs

Mr Mushroom uses PushBundle's Mix & Match Multiple Product setup.

A multi-product mix and match bundle allows shoppers to build one bundle by selecting from several separate Shopify products. PushBundle's documentation confirms that merchants can select multiple products, define the required pack quantity, and configure percentage, fixed, set-price, or no-discount pricing for each pack.

For Mr Mushroom, that creates a much more controlled build-your-own flow.

Solution 1: Customers Pick Products Until the Pack Is Complete

On the bundle page, shoppers choose the products they want for their pack.

For a 4-pack, the interface keeps track of how many selections have been made. If the shopper has chosen two items, for example, the bundle displays “Selected Products 2/4.”

A progress bar gives the customer another visual indication of how close they are to completing the bundle.

Most importantly, the Add to Cart button remains inactive until the required quantity has been selected.

A shopper therefore cannot select two products from a four-product pack and proceed while still receiving the bundle offer. They have to complete all four selections first.

This type of progress-based bundle interface is also documented in PushBundle's current build-your-own experience, where the selected item count and progress bar show customers how many products remain before the bundle is complete.

That makes the quantity requirement part of the shopping experience rather than something the merchant has to correct after the order arrives.

Solution 2: The Completed Pack Goes Into the Cart as One Bundle

Once the shopper completes the pack and adds it to the cart, the bundle is represented as a single bundle product.

The selected products still make up the bundle, but customers cannot go to the cart and remove one individual component to turn a four-product bundle into a three-product order while keeping the bundle structure or discount.

This matters because enforcing the rule only on the product page would not be enough if customers could bypass it afterward.

PushBundle's current Shopify App Store listing also states that bundles can be shown as a single product in the cart while maintaining inventory synchronization for the products inside the bundle.

For the multi-product bundle itself, PushBundle documents that the bundle product acts as a wrapper while inventory remains tied to the original products and variants.

That gives Mr Mushroom a clean cart presentation without turning the bundle into separate manually removable snack lines.

Solution 3: Customers Can Buy More Than One Custom Pack

Completing one pack does not end the build-your-own experience.

A shopper can add the completed bundle to the cart and then buy another one.

They can purchase multiple copies of the same bundle, or return to the bundle builder and create another pack with a different combination of flavors.

For example, someone could build one 4-pack with mushroom and vegetable snacks, add it to the cart, then create another 4-pack focused on freeze-dried fruit.

That is useful for a catalog where customer preferences can vary from one box to another. The merchant does not have to create separate products for every possible combination, and the shopper is not limited to one custom assortment per order.

Solution 4: The 4-Pack and 6-Pack Create a Simple Discount Ladder

Mr Mushroom does not offer only one build-your-own size.

The store gives shoppers a smaller 4-pack with 5% off and a larger 6-pack with 8% off.

PushBundle supports discounts at the Quantity Pack level, which means different pack sizes can have different pricing rules. Merchants can use percentage discounts, fixed discounts, a predetermined bundle price, or no discount at all.

For another merchant, the important part is not copying 5% and 8%.

The useful process is to decide the pack sizes first, calculate what each discount does to the per-item price, and then make sure the larger pack provides enough additional value without creating a margin problem.

What Else Can PushBundle Do?

The Mr Mushroom case study uses only part of PushBundle's feature set. You can create a snack box in different ways with PushBundle.

A merchant can also use PushBundle for Mix & Match Single Product bundles when the choices are variants of one product rather than separate products. The app supports Build Your Own Box experiences, volume bundles with quantity-based discount tiers, cross-sell bundles, box-specific discounts, and multi-pack discounts.

Merchants can also define minimum and maximum quantity rules and control how many variants or how much of each variant a customer can select. PushBundle's documentation specifically supports advanced quantity restrictions at the variant level.

Its current App Store listing also includes free gifts, free shipping rewards, customer eligibility rules, scheduled offers, custom layouts, Shopify POS support, and multi-step Build Your Own Box experiences.

That means a snack merchant could start with a simple 4-pack or 6-pack like Mr Mushroom and later use different bundle types for other buying situations without forcing every promotion into the same structure.

Is a Setup Like Mr Mushroom's Right for Your Store?

A setup like this makes the most sense when you sell many flavors, scents, varieties, or other low-priced products that shoppers may want to combine themselves.

A snack company with 12 flavors is an obvious example, but the same structure could apply to tea, candles, beauty products, small accessories, or other catalogs where personal preference matters.

Not every merchant needs mix-and-match.

If you have only a few curated sets and you want to choose exactly what goes into each one, a fixed bundle may be enough. Stores with many products that customers need to combine themselves may instead need a dedicated bundle app instead of native bundles.

If customers need to choose interchangeable products themselves, a dedicated bundle app becomes more relevant. Shopify explicitly points merchants toward third-party bundle apps for mix-and-match, with custom Bundles API development also available to Shopify Plus stores.

Shopify also requires stores selling product bundles to use the Online Store channel or a custom storefront, have a bundles app installed, and use an upgraded checkout.

Since this Mr Mushroom case study does not report sales results, merchants testing a similar setup should measure what happens after launch. Useful metrics include how many orders contain bundles instead of single products, the split between 4-pack and 6-pack purchases, average order value, repeat bundle purchases, and which flavors shoppers choose most often.

Conclusion

If you sell many flavors, start by counting how many products customers could realistically combine.

Then decide which pack sizes make sense, set a clear selection limit for each pack, calculate the discount and per-item price, and test the entire journey from the first product selection through the cart.

Mr Mushroom shows one way to structure that experience. Customers can build a 4-pack or 6-pack, see their progress as they select products, complete the required quantity before Add to Cart becomes available, and send the completed selection to the cart as one bundle.

PushBundle is one possible solution for creating this type of build your own bundle on Shopify. The important part is matching the bundle structure to how your products are organized and how your customers actually want to choose them.

FAQ

What is a multi-product mix and match bundle on Shopify?
A multi-product mix and match bundle lets customers create one bundle by selecting from several separate Shopify products. A fixed bundle has products chosen by the merchant in advance. Multi-product mix-and-match works well when customers need to pick their own flavors, scents, products, or other interchangeable options.
Does Shopify's free Bundles app support mix-and-match bundles?
No. Shopify's free Bundles app supports fixed bundles and multipacks but does not support mix-and-match bundles. Shopify recommends compatible third-party apps for mix-and-match setups. Shopify Plus merchants can also build custom bundle experiences using Shopify's Bundles APIs.
Can customers pick their own flavors in a bundle on Shopify?
Yes. A mix and match bundle app can let customers select the flavors or products they want until they reach the required bundle quantity. In the Mr Mushroom setup, customers choose products for a 4-pack or 6-pack before the completed bundle can be added to the cart.
How many flavor combinations can shoppers build from 12 flavors?
If every selected flavor must be different, 12 flavors create 495 possible 4-packs and 924 possible 6-packs. If repeats are allowed, those numbers increase to 1,365 and 12,376. The exact number available on a storefront depends on the merchant's bundle selection rules.
How do the 4-pack and 6-pack discounts work at Mr Mushroom?
Mr Mushroom's 4-pack offers a 5% bundle discount, while the 6-pack offers 8%. Using a $6.49 single-bag price, that works out to about $24.66 for four bags and $35.82 for six. The larger bundle therefore has both a larger order size and a stronger percentage discount.
Can customers remove one product from the Mr Mushroom bundle in the cart?
No. Once the completed Mr Mushroom bundle is added, it appears in the cart as one bundle product rather than separate removable snack products. Customers cannot remove one component from the cart to bypass the required pack quantity. They can, however, add another completed bundle to the same order.
Can a customer buy multiple different build-your-own bundles?
Yes. After adding one completed bundle to the cart, the customer can create another bundle with a different selection of products. They can also purchase multiple copies of the same bundle. This allows one order to contain several custom assortments rather than limiting the shopper to a single pack.
